A Letter to the American People

Dear American Opposition:

The cancellations of Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel are not programming changes, they’re political executions.

These are the final gasps of free speech on our airwaves, silenced not because the people turned away, but because the regime could not stand to be mocked.

Comedy has always been one of the last lines of defense against tyranny. Laughter is rebellion. It is the one sound dictators cannot endure, because it exposes their weaknesses.

When we lose our comedians, we lose our mirrors and the reflections that keep us honest.

The founders did not write the First Amendment to protect safe speech. They wrote it to protect dangerous speech — the kind that offends kings, rattles tyrants, and unsettles the powerful.

When a government extinguishes that speech, it is declaring war on its own people.

First the comedians. Next, the journalists. Then the teachers, the artists, and the opposition, until only one voice remains: The voice of power.

Do not call this a small thing. Do not shrug your shoulders and say, “it’s just television.”

No. This is the beginning of a silence that will smother every free man and woman in this nation unless we stand against it immediately.

History has shown us what happens when people fall asleep while their freedoms are stripped away. What begins as the cancellation of two shows becomes the cancellation of dissent which then leads to the cancellation of freedom itself.

If we do not resist now, we will have no voice left to resist with later. So let’s make this pledge: We will not sleep. We will not wait. We will not bow.

We will never submit.

This is our line in the sand. If we do not defend speech now, we will lose the foundation of our liberty. And once it is gone, we may never get it back.

History is watching. The question is whether we will prove worthy of the Constitution we inherited, or whether we will let it slip away in silence.

This is our generational test. Let’s make sure we pass it.

In solidarity and in defiance,

Carlos Álvarez-Aranyos
